To determine the correct violin size, you'll need to measure the player’s arm length. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you measure properly:
1. Have the Player Stand Up Straight:
- Ensure they are standing up with their arm fully extended.
2. Measure the Arm Length:
- Use a tape measure or ruler.
- Have the player extend their left arm straight out to the side, parallel to the floor.
- Measure from the centre of the back of the neck (where the neck meets the shoulders) to the middle of the palm (where the fingers start).
3. Determine the Correct Size:
4. Check the Fit:
- Once you have the violin, ensure that the player can comfortably reach the scroll with their left hand and that their arm is not overly stretched or cramped.
5. Consult a Professional:
- If you’re unsure about the measurements or the fit, visiting a violin shop or consulting with a teacher can provide additional guidance and ensure you choose the right size.
- Proper sizing is crucial for comfort and effective learning, so taking the time to measure and adjust accordingly will pay off in the long run.
